This dissertation identifies a set of leadership competencies that those in church leadership positions consider essential for professional ministerial staff to possess in order to lead effectively. Chapter 1 provided the research problem that justifies the research. It also defines the research questions that are used to drive the study. Chapter 2 furnishes a biblical view of leadership. It also examines business's leadership theories and behaviors with a special interest in leadership typologies. In addition, chapter 2 investigates leadership within the local church as it is described in the literature. Chapter 3 provides the methodological design of the study. The purpose of the study, as well as a detailed description of the logistics involved in the study, is spelled out in detail. Such factors as the study's population, delimitations, instrumentation and procedures are included in the chapter. Chapter 4 gives the analysis of findings. It consists primarily of the answers to the research questions. The findings are presented in both verbal and graphic forms. Important demographic factors are also included. The chapter concludes with an evaluation of the research design. Chapter 5 sets forth the conclusions and applications that result from the study. Research applications are overviewed and provided in a list form. These are followed by demographic implications, research applications, and suggestions for further research. One of the major contributions of this study is the list of 15 leadership competencies helpful for professional church staff. This list resulted in the development of the Ministerial Leadership Competency Questionnaire. It is hoped that the MLCQ will be used and scrutinized, so that legitimate improvements can be made to the instrument, and in turn the list of competencies, so that this set of competencies will become a valuable tool for professional church leadership development.
